On the afternoon of July 10, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Danh - Chairman of Nam Nung Commune People's Committee (Lam Dong) - said that the locality is coordinating with functional agencies to investigate and clarify the drowning incident that killed 5 female students, and at the same time continue to support the families of the victims to take care of the funeral.
According to Mr. Danh, in the morning of the same day, 8 female students rode electric bicycles to Dak Pok irrigation lake (Quang Ha village, Nam Nung commune) to swim.
When they discovered 5 friends drowning, the remaining 3 children ran to find people to call for help. However, at that time the lake area was deserted, so when everyone received the news and arrived at the scene, it was too late," Mr. Danh said.
Also according to the leader of Nam Nung Commune People's Committee, there are many ponds, lakes, and irrigation dams in the area that pose a risk of drowning.
Over the past time, the locality has placed warning signs at dangerous locations, and at the same time regularly propagated and reminded people and students not to swim at lakes and dams.
In the afternoon of the same day, Mr. Bui Danh Thang - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nam Nung commune - along with representatives of the People's Council, People's Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune and mass organizations visited and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
Initially, the Commune People's Committee supported each family with a victim with 8 million VND from the contingency fund.
The Red Cross Society of Lam Dong province also supported each family with 3 million VND to share difficulties.
As Lao Dong Newspaper reported, at about 8:30 am on July 10, 8 female students from Nam N'Dir Secondary School invited each other to Dak Pok irrigation lake to swim.
While swimming, 5 children unfortunately fell into a deep water area and drowned; the remaining 3 children ran to report to the people and local authorities.
Upon receiving the news, the police force, the Military Command of the commune and people quickly organized a search. At about 11:20 am, all 5 victims were found dead.
The victims include: D.M.T, L.T.Y.C, B.T.T, L.T.N and B.T.N.Y, all born in 2015 (11 years old) and students of Nam N'Dir Secondary School.
