At noon on July 10, Mr. Tran Quang Hoa - Vice Chairman of Nam Nung Commune People's Committee (Lam Dong) - confirmed that a particularly serious drowning incident had just occurred in the area, killing 5 female students.

According to initial information, at about 8:30 am on the same day, 8 female students, all 15 years old and students of Nam N'Dir Secondary School, invited each other to Y Thinh irrigation lake (Quang Ha village, Nam Nung commune) to swim.
While swimming, 5 children unfortunately fell into a deep water area and drowned. The remaining three children ran back to report to the people and local authorities.
Upon receiving the news, the police force, the Military Command of the commune and people quickly arrived at the scene to organize search and rescue.
At about 11:20 am, functional forces found all 5 victims in a state of death.

The victims include: D.M.T, L.T.Y.C, B.T.T, L.T.N and B.T.N.Y, all born in 2011 (15 years old) and students of Nam N'Dir Secondary School.
Functional agencies are investigating and clarifying the cause of the incident. Local authorities are also implementing support work, visiting families to take care of the funerals for the victims.
According to local authorities, Y Thinh irrigation lake is an irrigation project, with many deep water areas, posing a risk of unsafety if people go swimming.
The area of the lake surface ranges from about 20 to 50ha, the lake water level is from 2 to 10 meters deep, depending on the rainy or dry season.
Over the past time, the locality has implemented many measures to prevent and combat drowning such as erecting no swimming signs, strengthening propaganda on the grassroots broadcasting system and reminding families to manage and not let their children voluntarily go to the lake to swim.
