An Giang - Tran Van Thanh Management Scholarship was established by the Thanh My Tay Commune Fatherland Front Committee, both supporting going to school and educating patriotic traditions.

Named after the anti-French hero

Quan Co Tran Van Thanh was the leader of the Lang Linh - Bay Thua uprising (1867 - 1873), resiliently resisting the French colonialists. His patriotism and integrity were preserved by the people of An Giang through many generations.

In Thanh My Tay commune, which is associated with the National Relic Temple of Quan Co Tran Van Thanh, his name was given to the scholarship fund to support education. Mr. Luong Van Tu Cuong - Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Thanh My Tay commune, the unit that formed and operated the scholarship - said that naming the scholarship after the historical hero is to remind the young generation of the tradition of "drinking water, remembering the source".

More than 10 years of supporting schools

Mr. Tu Cuong said that the scholarship was formed from the 2015-2016 school year, when the situation of students dropping out of school in the area became complicated. After thoroughly grasping, the Fatherland Front and commune organizations went to each family to find out the causes to have practical support solutions. After determining that most students had to drop out of school due to poor circumstances, orphanage or parents working far away, having to live with grandparents...., the Commune Fatherland Front Committee advised on building a scholarship model from socialized sources.

In the first year, the program awarded 16 scholarships with the joint efforts of 5 philanthropists in the locality. Scholarships are associated with the requirement to maintain or improve academic results. Many students are supported continuously for 5-7 years, with conditions to complete the general education program and pass the university entrance exam.

Over the past 10 years, scholarships have continuously grown in both quantity and level of support, meeting the practical learning needs of students" - Mr. Tu Cuong shared.

Expanding to freshmen

Before the 2026 - 2027 school year, the locality organized the 11th "Tran Van Thanh Tournament" scholarship awarding ceremony, with 76 scholarships for students in three levels: primary, secondary and high school. This year, the program expanded the target group to new students, awarding 2 scholarships to students entering university in the 2026 - 2030 period.

Each scholarship is worth 20 million VND, supported for 4 years of study, helping students have more conditions to pursue longer studies, preparing professional baggage for the future. Program resources come from society, with the companionship of the Management Board of Quan Co Tran Van Thanh Temple, the Executive Board of Hoa Hao Buddhist Sangha, the Red Cross Society of the commune and many individuals and organizations.

From the first scholarships, to now, there have been students who have grown up, have stable jobs and then return to contribute to the fund. That continuing cycle not only helps the program have more resources to continue to accompany disadvantaged students in the area, but also sows beautiful life values: people who were once helped today become supporters for future generations.
