Leaving the army more than 40 years ago, veteran Nguyen Van Quan (born in 1962) in Lao Cai still maintains his demeanor, will and sense of responsibility as a soldier. Not only successfully building a integrated economic model with an income of 400-500 million VND per year, he also actively participates in social and charity activities, becoming a typical example of the Veterans Association in economic development and homeland construction, according to the Lao Cai Provincial e-Portal.
During his military service, Mr. Quan worked at Battalion 61, Department of Supplies, General Department of Logistics, performing logistics management and cargo inspection tasks at Chua Ve port (Hai Phong). Discharged from the army in 1983, he carried discipline, perseverance and the spirit of overcoming difficulties to begin his career journey.
In 2003, he went to Lao Cai to seek economic development opportunities. In 2005, he decided to stick with Thong Nhat land (now Cam Duong ward) and gradually build a sustainable integrated economic model.
Currently, on the family's garden area, there are about 1,000 ornamental kumquat trees and many types of fruit trees such as longan, orange, guava. Ornamental kumquats have become the main crops, creating their own brand every Lunar New Year. Thanks to the kumquat trees with beautiful shapes and many fruits, being sought after by many customers, local people are used to calling him "Quan Quat".

Besides cultivation, his family develops animal husbandry in a closed direction with local black pigs, supplying the market with 3-4 tons of pork each year. In addition, they also raise chickens, geese and take advantage of a pond of about 500m2 to raise catfish, grass carp, and catfish, and also take water for irrigation.
Thanks to diligence and boldly applying technical advances, the VAC model brings in income from 400-500 million VND per year after deducting expenses. His family also creates regular jobs for 2-3 local workers and 3-6 seasonal workers, with an income of 250,000-300,000 VND/day, reaching 400,000-500,000 VND/day at peak times.
Not only developing the economy, Mr. Quan also actively participates in social work. He used to be a member of the Executive Committee of the People's Council, holding the position of Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thong Nhat ward (old), deputy head of the good production and business club and is a typical veteran businessman of Lao Cai city (old). With his positive contributions, he has been awarded certificates of merit and certificates of commendation many times by levels and sectors.
What is commendable is that he always pays attention to the community through charity activities, supporting the poor, helping difficult families and accompanying social security movements launched by the locality and the Veterans Association. At the same time, he is willing to share experiences and guide production techniques for members and people who need economic development.
From a soldier in the army to a farmer who is good at economics, veteran Nguyen Van Quan has contributed to spreading the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers through labor, creativity, spirit of responsibility and practical actions for the community.
