Here are some ways to help reduce sugar levels during pregnancy shared by internist Gaurav Jain (India).
1. Balanced diet
A diet for gestational diabetes should be balanced, including whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables and healthy fats to help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
2. Regular physical activity
Regular exercise can help lower blood sugar by improving the body's ability to use insulin. Activities such as walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are safe options for most pregnant women.
3. Eat small, frequent meals
Eating small meals helps prevent spikes in blood sugar. Eat frequently to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.
4. Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods
Fiber helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Foods high in fiber, such as vegetables, beans, fruits, and whole grains, can help keep blood sugar levels stable.
5. Drink enough water
Drinking enough water helps regulate blood sugar levels because dehydration can lead to increased blood sugar levels.
6. Avoid sugary foods and drinks
Minimize sugary snacks, desserts, and drinks because they can cause spikes in blood sugar. Choose naturally sweet foods like fruit, and drink water, herbal tea, or unsweetened beverages instead of sugary drinks.
7. Get enough sleep
Poor sleep can affect insulin sensitivity and lead to higher blood sugar levels. So aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep each night can support overall health and regulate blood sugar levels.
