The link between stuffed toys and asthma
According to Dr Akash Shah, Consultant Pathologist, Neuberg Diagnostics, Ahmedabad (India), asthma is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation of the bronchial airways, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and difficulty with exercise. It is a common and often severe condition in infants and children.
Dust mites, these microscopic creatures thrive in warm, moist environments and are often found in soft fabrics, including the stuffing and surfaces of children's stuffed toys.
“Dust mites themselves are not a problem, but their droppings contain proteins that can irritate the respiratory tract when inhaled. This can lead to common asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. For children who cuddle or sleep with stuffed toys, this daily exposure can lead to these symptoms,” says Dr. Akash Shah.
The importance of regular cleaning
To minimize the risk of stuffed toy-induced asthma, maintaining a regular cleaning routine is essential. Dust mites are resilient but can be significantly reduced through proper cleaning practices. Here are some practical tips from experts to keep stuffed toys clean and safe:
- Hot water washing: Washing stuffed toys in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) once a week is one of the most effective ways to kill dust mites.
- Dry thoroughly: After washing, dry the toy thoroughly in a dryer on high heat. It is important to ensure the toy is completely dry as moisture can promote the growth of dust mites.
- Limit the number of toys: Reducing the number of stuffed toys in a child's room can reduce the likelihood of dust mites accumulating.
