HUE - The project to preserve and restore the Imperial Academy relic is expected to start construction in November, after completing all necessary procedures.
This is a project invested by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, with a total cost of more than 108 billion VND, approved by the Hue City People's Committee. The Quoc Tu Giam relic - which used to be the headquarters of the Hue Historical Museum, has now been fully handed over to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center in early 2025, after the Museum moved to a new address at 268 Dien Bien Phu.According to the inspection results from the Hue City Department of Construction, Di Luan Duong - the central building of the relic is classified as a level C dangerous project. Many components of the building have seriously degraded, making it unsafe for normal use. The Department of Construction recommends that the demolition be necessary to be able to restore, reinforce the structure and upgrade to ensure load-bearing capacity (images inside the Imperial Academy). Not only Di Luan Duong, other categories such as Hoc ta - Hoc huu, Giam Sinh ta - Giam Sinh huu and Nha Tru will also be unblocked and restored synchronously. The yard area and surrounding walking paths will be renovated; at the same time, the tree system will be renovated, keeping the trees that are still growing well. The accompanying technical infrastructure is also invested with a water supply and drainage system, lighting, security cameras, fire prevention and fighting, parking lot... to ensure the necessary conditions for long-term preservation and promoting the value of the relic (on the surface is a corner of Di Luan Duong). The Hue Monuments Conservation Center said that during the process of preparing the feasibility study report, the unit organized a field survey, inspected the current status of the project, and collected related historical and cultural documents. The restoration plan was also consulted with experts and researchers (the wooden pillars of Di Luan Duong are degraded). The school building on the left side of Di Luan Duong where the Nguyen Dynasty's vicarages studied in the past has now been degraded and severely damaged by a fire that occurred in 2022.Before the restoration period, the works had not been demolished, posing a high risk of collapse of some parts, and should not be approached. Some unique motifs and decorations at Di Luan Duong. After completing the restoration, the Imperial Academy of the Nguyen Dynasty will be converted into the Museum of Education and Science - a space of educational and historical significance, contributing to spreading traditional values to future generations.
After unifying the country, King Gia Long chose Hue as the capital for the whole country, which was also the reason for the birth of the second Quoc Tu Giam of the country. Initially, Quoc Tu Giam school was located at Van Thanh street (Kim Long ward, Hue city) now Van Vo Mieu. Because the school was a bit far from the city center, in 1908, the royal court moved it to the near left side of the Imperial City as it is today.
The subjects studying at Quoc Tu Giam school include: Con (children of the Royal Family), Am Sinh (children of great gods during the Dynasty), students (brilliant and excellent young people across the country), talented people, and bachelors who have passed the Huong exam in the provinces.
