Racing against the sun, the long-standing rice paper village in Can Tho is in a hurry for Tet

These days, the production atmosphere at Thuan Hung rice paper craft village (Thuan Hung ward, Can Tho city) is starting to become bustling to promptly serve Tet orders.

With nearly 40 years of attachment to the profession, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bu (71 years old) is excited that customer purchasing power this year has increased sharply. Her family has been fully booked until the 4th day of Tet.

To be on time for Tet orders, Mrs. Bu has to wake up at 1 am to dry the cakes: "It's very hard, but it's fun. From 1 - 2 am, I have to struggle to get up and set up the oven. Doing this job is to befriend the darkness, to be on time when the sun sets to have cakes to dry immediately to get sunshine," Mrs. Bu shared.

Also according to Mrs. Bu, to make a delicious cake, the secret lies in the way of mixing flour and seasoning so that the cake when baked has a chewiness, the characteristic aroma of rice and a moderately rich taste.

In particular, the craft of making rice paper completely depends on "heaven". Immediately after leaving the oven, the rice papers will be taken to the drying rig to dry in time for the day.

Under the scorching sun, people meticulously arrange each rack of cakes on the drying rack. The bigger the sun, the more beautiful and quickly dried the cakes, helping people to keep up with the delivery schedule for customers.

As for Ms. Van Thi Tho (Thuan Hung ward, Can Tho city), this Tet crop, her family had to hire 2 more people to help with work because purchasing power increased.

If husband and wife work together, with good weather, each day they can earn from 600,000 - 700,000 VND. At the peak of the Tet season, when demand increases, earning 1 million VND per day is completely within reach," Ms. Tho shared.

According to Mr. Bui Cuu Long - Vice Chairman of Thuan Hung Ward People's Committee, Thuan Hung rice paper craft village has about 57 households producing regularly, creating jobs for hundreds of local workers.
