My Tan ornamental plant village - Success from converting crop structure

From the model of crop restructuring, people not only escape poverty but also build a model new rural brand, making My Tan (Tan Quang commune, Tuyen Quang province) a bright spot in the local economy - culture. My Tan village has an area of 211 hectares, located in the east of Tan Quang commune, along the banks of the Lo river. Although the terrain is favorable for irrigation, it has been affected by flooding during the rainy season for many years. Along the concrete road leading to the village, each peach garden and green laurel wreath stretches out, painting a picture of a peaceful and vibrant countryside.

About 80% of residents are migrants from Nam Dinh and Thai Binh (old) since the 1960s. They were initially attached to orange trees, rice, corn, vegetables and small-scale livestock. However, the productivity of short-term crops is not high, natural disasters are frequent, making the road to escape poverty difficult. The turning point came when the whole village simultaneously switched to growing flowers and ornamental plants. Currently, My Tan has 20 hectares of planted with about 70,000 trees, of which 15 hectares are la truong and incense sticks, the rest is mainly ornamental peach trees. The results are clear: out of 73 households, 20 households have earned over 60 million VND/person/year, and their lives have improved significantly.

A typical example is the village chief Tran Van Giang - the pioneer in turning My Tan into a ornamental village. He owns nearly 3 hectares of garden, earning about 400 million VND per month, and creating jobs for many workers.

With those achievements, in 2022, Mr. Giang was honored as a member of the National Farmers' Association for Excellence and in 2023 received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister.

Mr. Luu Van Hung's family is also one of the households that invested systematically, owning more than 1 hectare of Sanh and Tung la An gardens, with an annual profit of over 500 million VND. To increase the value, Mr. Hung hired Ninh Binh and Bac Ninh workers to create shapes and bend the position of perennial trees. The embryos are carefully selected, with ancient shapes and old trunks, and are meticulously cared for, thanks to which the value of ornamental plants increases many times.

However, not every household has enough capital to invest. Many families choose to "tak short and raise long", intercrop vegetables, sweet soup, and oranges to both earn income and raise capital to take care of ornamental plants. Planting ornamental plants to grow beautifully takes 5 - 10 years, or even longer, for economic value. The cross-ultural model helps maintain livelihoods and create momentum for long-term garden development.

With its existing tradition and potential, My Tan is aiming to become a typical ornamental plant area, contributing to building a model new rural area. The village has had 2 products achieve 3-star OCOP: Dao Can (2018) and Tung La Han (2025). To build a sustainable brand, the Tan Quang commune government is implementing many solutions: supporting OCOP product upgrade dossiers; diversifying designs, applying smart irrigation technology; registering the collective trademark "My Tan - Tan Quang Ornamental Plants" associated with cultural and historical stories. At the same time, it is to promote trade through fairs, e-commerce, connecting with new tourist areas and urban areas. Not only producing, the locality also orients the development of craft village experience tourism, inviting artisans and experts to train the younger generation, increasing the role of cooperatives and ornamental plant associations in organizing production, supporting capital, technology and infrastructure. Today, when coming to My Tan village, visitors not only admire the brilliant, ancient, and colorful bonsai gardens, but also clearly feel the spirit of innovation, creativity and efforts to overcome difficulties of the people. From a flooded land that is difficult to cultivate, My Tan has now become a model "land of ornamental flowers" - a testament to the strong rise of farmers' hands and intelligence.
