Hanoi - Many old apartment buildings in the capital are seriously degraded, people are still clinging to cramped apartments, waiting for the day to be renovated.
Among the modern urban areas of the Capital, many collective housing areas built decades ago are still home to thousands of households. Time and the degradation of the project have caused old rows of houses to increasingly reveal signs of unsafety, while many people still have to stick with it because they do not have the conditions to move out.In Ngoc Khanh apartment complex (Giang Vo ward), 58 buildings ranging from 2 to 4 floors built before 1994 are currently home to about 6,500 people. After many decades of use, many items have seriously deteriorated with cracked walls, peeling stairs, old electricity and water systems and cramped living space.Building A of the apartment complex has been assessed by functional agencies as a dangerous level D apartment building.The walls are damp and mossy, stained with the color of time.Ms. Bui Bich Thuy's apartment is located on the 4th floor of building A, Ngoc Khanh apartment complex, and often suffers from leaks.According to Ms. Thuy, the family has to place many buckets and basins from the door to the bedroom to collect water every time it rains heavily or the apartments above are flooded. Although tarpaulins have been stretched on the ceiling, the leakage situation has not improved.Not far away, the Giang Vo apartment complex (Giang Vo ward) also has an old appearance after many years of use.Many residents said that daily life faces many inconveniences when many items of the project have deteriorated and been damaged. Although they want to move to a more spacious place to live, most households still have to continue to stay due to limited economic conditions.Narrow corridors, lack of light, peeling paint and patchy walls make the space damp and old.Meanwhile, the Thanh Cong apartment complex (Giang Vo ward), built in 1979-1982, also bears the imprint of time. Rows of houses from 2 to 5 floors show many signs of degradation after more than 40 years of use.Building G6A is assessed as dangerous at level D and was once one of the high-risk projects in Hanoi. Currently, households have been relocated to ensure safety before implementing the next steps of the renovation project.
The above-mentioned old apartment buildings are all on the list planned by Hanoi City for new construction and renovation recently.
In which Hanoi City has assigned the Department of Construction to preside over and coordinate with relevant communes and wards to deploy the commencement of renovation and reconstruction of 8 old apartment projects in the area.
These 8 projects include: Giang Vo Collective Housing Area, Ngoc Khanh Collective Housing Area and Thanh Cong Collective Housing Area (Giang Vo ward); 3-story Collective Housing Area (Ha Dong ward); Apartment building 23 Hang Tre, 162 Tran Quang Khai (Hoan Kiem ward); Apartment building 15C Tran Khanh Du (Cua Nam ward); Truong Dinh Collective Housing Area (including buildings A, B, C, D, E, H1, H2, H3, H4, H5) and neighboring residential area (Tuong Mai ward); Thanh Xuan Bac Collective Housing Area (Thanh Xuan ward).
From now until the end of 2026, the city aims to start and implement the construction of many important projects, including 8 projects to renovate and rebuild the above-mentioned old apartment buildings.
