Don't let the underground space continue to float on the drawing

Ho Chi Minh City is researching an underground space complex in the center, notably the cluster of works under 23/9 Park connecting Ben Thanh station.

In addition, there is also a parking project combined with a commercial center under Ton Duc Thang street.

On many central streets of Ho Chi Minh City, cars park encroaching on sidewalks, occupying and narrowing the already crowded road surface.

That is a story that happens every day, but so far there has been no fundamental solution.

Not to mention, with more than 1.2 million cars, more than 11.5 million motorbikes and a large number of vehicles from localities pouring in every day, Ho Chi Minh City cannot continue to solve the traffic problem with only the land on the surface.

If you want more living space, you can expand it by exploiting underground.

Ho Chi Minh City is facing the opportunity to create that new urban layer, especially when Metro Line 1 has been operating and the metro network is continuing to expand.

However, what worries people is not the drawing, but when will the project become a reality for people to benefit from?

Because for more than 20 years, Ho Chi Minh City has not lacked ideas about underground spaces. Underground parking projects at Le Van Tam Park, Tao Dan, Trong Dong stage or Hoa Lu stadium were once highly expected.

But in the end, those projects still stop at planning, proposals or dossiers that cannot be implemented.

In other words, many underground space projects in recent years have mainly existed on paper and information in newspapers.

The reasons are lack of synchronous planning, inappropriate investment mechanisms, prolonged procedures, and financial problems that are not attractive to investors.

An underground project with very large investment capital, if only relying on parking fees, it is difficult for any business to be able to pursue it.

To be successful, it is necessary to allow the formation of multi-functional complexes, combining parking lots with commerce, services, entertainment and public transport connections.

In other words, underground space should not be seen as just a giant parking lot, but as a part of the urban economy.

Especially, when Ho Chi Minh City is promoting the development of the night economy, the underground space is an important link.

Shopping, culinary, and service areas connected to the metro can extend the operating time of the city, create more jobs, increase revenue and improve the quality of life for people.

People do not need more beautiful models displayed on forums, people need underground parking lots, service centers and existing metro connection routes in life.

The proposal to deploy underground space complexes is good news, but that joy will only be complete when the project is started, completed and put into use.

Ho Chi Minh City has too many underground projects in drawers, don't let this underground space continue to float on the drawings.
