Stopping red lights at the cross is fined 20 million VND, need to flexibly handle each violation case

Lê Thanh Phong |

Regarding the regulation on stopping red lights running on the line and being fined up to 20 million VND, there have been many controversial opinions on forums and media channels.

According to Decree 168/2024, failure to comply with traffic light signals will be fined 18-20 million VND for car drivers and 4-6 million VND for motorcyclists. Both cases have had their driving licenses deducted 4 points".

Many drivers believe that if they stop and wait too long, they should only be punished for "not complying with the road markings". A representative of the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) explained that errors related to road markings are only used in cases such as cross-line markings, line-line/rupture to divide lanes, and directional lines.

In the case of the line to stop in front of the traffic light, it is necessary to understand that the line here is equivalent to a nail, bypassing is a violation of traffic light regulations.

Many opinions say that when traffic participants stop in front of the road, they are well aware of participating in traffic. The crossing could be due to a technical error.

Regarding behavior, running a red light is a wheelchair, which can cause traffic collisions, stopping a curved vehicle, the vehicle does not wheel, and does not endanger road users.

In fact, in many densely populated cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, there are many vehicles, so sometimes there are violations that drivers do not intentionally commit.

For example, a vehicle is in traffic, with a green light for a few seconds to cross the intersection before a red light, but the vehicle in front suddenly stops, forcing the rear vehicle to stop, leading to a violation of the line.

Similarly, when a car was rolling through the intersection, suddenly a motorbike had to stop for a few seconds, so the traffic light turned red, and the driver fell into a rolling position.

These violations are due to incidents on the road, drivers do not intentionally violate, and being fined 20 million VND such as running a red light is inappropriate.

In other cases, some traffic lights suddenly turned red from green, causing drivers to stop in time but still violate the line. This is a technical error, a penalty such as running a red light is unfair to the driver.

Therefore, the majority of opinions on traffic forums suggest that each violation should be reviewed and flexibly handled. If the driver does not intentionally violate, the penalty will be the same as for violations of other road markings.

Similar to cases of running red lights, if the driver violates the law by giving priority to the vehicle, due to broken traffic lights or encountering traffic congestion and chaos, the traffic police will not punish.

The regulation on strict traffic fines is to raise people's awareness of complying with traffic laws, but considering each case to flexibly punish is necessary for people to "conquer and dominate".
