English, Vietnamese

Recently, some people have raised the question of why not domesticate the Vietnamese name of the "Pickleball" sport?

The argument put forward is that when many other sports can be converted from English names, pickleball can also be done. Furthermore, when the National Federation of this sport is established, the appearance of purely Vietnamese names will be more meaningful.

Of course, that also sparked a wave of discussion with opposing views, between one side setting a noble goal on the aspect of "preserving the purity of the Vietnamese language", and the other side claiming that it is unnecessary coercion. However, the conversion and localization of names has never followed a common formula.

We have football (Football or Soccer), table tennis (Table Tennis), badminton (Badminton) or tennis (Tennis) that have been translated smoothly, sounds pleasing to the ear and goes deep into life for a long time. But at the same time, a series of international names should not/cannot be Vietnamized, such as: Golf, Bowling, Taekwondo, Karate, Judo... This means that, when establishing management organizations, national federations in Vietnam must still be associated with English names - such as the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation or the Vietnam Golf Association. No one tries to translate Golf into any Vietnamese word.

Even, like "boxing" in Vietnamese, but people are still used to calling it boxing. There is the Vietnam Boxing Federation, but it is still called the Vietnam Boxing Federation for convenience. Then there is the Federation that combines both English and Vietnamese - like the Vietnam Skating and Roller Sports Federation.

Returning to Pickleball, this is essentially a sport that combines tennis, badminton and table tennis. Trying to find purely Vietnamese nouns to attribute to a "three-in-one" entity easily creates cumbersome, incomprehensible names, even distorted with sarcastic, mocking names - very easily seen on forums.

The purpose of preserving Vietnamese is good, but trying to transform in a forced way brings a dark name, or does not fully encompass the nature of the sport.

There are intersections that do not weaken Vietnamese, but only reflect the natural integration capacity of modern social life. And when Vietnamese martial arts is also converted into Vovinam, don't make it difficult for yourself just to convert "difficult words/names".
