From the red light incident on Highway 51, beware of drivers being unjustly fined

Lê Thanh Phong |

According to information from the Traffic Safety Committee of Dong Nai province, the traffic light incident at the Ben Go intersection (Long Binh Tan ward, Bien Hoa city) - National Highway 51 has been handled.

Previously, on January 2, a clip appeared recording the scene of a long convoy of vehicles stopped on Highway 51 due to a malfunctioning red light that did not turn green for a long time. All the drivers patiently waited, because if they ran the red light, they would be heavily fined according to new regulations from January 1, 2025.

Drivers of both large and small vehicles do not dare to run red lights, leading to traffic jams and affecting the entire route. If someone "impatiently" runs a red light, they will be fined a large sum of money. The fault here is not the driver's, but the traffic light system. The lamp post should not be blamed, but the responsibility lies with the agency that manages and operates the traffic light system.

In the article "9,954 people died in traffic accidents and increased fines" published on January 2, 2025, Lao Dong Newspaper supported the increase in fines, and proposed that the government improve the quality of traffic infrastructure so that people comply well and are not unjustly fined.

The system of traffic signs and signals must be scientific, guiding road users accurately and clearly. In many places, the signs are confusing, difficult to understand, and hidden, like a "trap" to trap drivers. There are many cases of "wrongful" fines, due to the signs being hidden, not due to intentional violations.

The red light malfunction on Highway 51 shows that similar incidents can occur at many other locations. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the traffic light system nationwide, so as not to affect traffic and not to unfairly punish violators due to unintentional errors.

If a lamp post is malfunctioning, traffic police are present to guide drivers to safe traffic.

There are many traffic light malfunctions that drivers cannot foresee, such as suddenly changing from green to red. In this case, the fault lies with the traffic light system, and we should not automatically punish violators. The law must be enforced, but there are cases where it must be reasonable, only then is it reasonable.

Not only traffic lights, but also the traffic sign system is not standard in many places, confusing, drivers do not know which way to go. All signs must be adjusted to help drivers observe well, confidently follow the instructions, and not violate traffic laws.

The law stipulates heavy penalties to change people's awareness of traffic participation. Therefore, it is necessary to complete traffic guidance systems to support drivers in complying with regulations. Traffic civilization is first of all to build a modern and scientific traffic infrastructure system.
