Summer is the ideal time to enjoy sunlight and outdoor space, but it is also the time when UV rays are most active. UVia can cause skin damage even on cloudy days, says dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD at Weill Cornell Medicine. Proactively protecting your skin is the most effective way to prevent skin cancer and premature aging."
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day
Widespread sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which are a major cause of sunburn and skin aging. Prioritize products with an SPF of 30 or higher, apply for 15 minutes before going out and reapply every 2 hours.
Cover your skin with clothes
Long-sleeved shirts, long pants and a dress made of tightly woven fabric, dark colors can significantly reduce the impact of UV rays. You should choose an outfit with a UV anti-ray (UPF) label.
Wear UV-resistant sunglasses
Choose glasses that are labeled UV ray absorbers up to 400 nm to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes, where wrinkles and melasma are likely to appear.
Wearing a wide-brimmed hat
A 5 - 8 cm wide hat helps to protect the forehead, ears, neck and scalp, areas that are easily sunburned.
Avoid going out during hot weather
Limit direct exposure to sunlight from 10am to 4pm, when the UV index is at its peak. If you have to go outside, find shade or use an umbrella or hat.
Stay hydrated for healthy skin
Drinking at least 2 liters of water per day helps maintain skin moisture, reducing the risk of peeling and sun irritation.
Check your UV index every day
Use weather forecasts or UV metrics to determine the level of danger and adjust your exit plan accordingly.
Skin care after sun exposure
If your skin is red or slightly burning, apply a cold compress, apply aloe vera gel and moisturize regularly to soothe and repair the skin.
Notes for drugs that increase sun sensitivity
Some medications such as antibiotics, acne medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or products containing retinol can make the skin more vulnerable to sunlight.
Persistently implement every day
Skin protection is not a one-day deal. Dr. Brendan Camp emphasizes: A regular sunroof routine is the foundation for maintaining healthy and youthful skin for a long time.
