Do exercises that cause pain or discomfort
This is something you should never do, no matter your age. Listening to your body is important when it comes to exercise. As you get older, joint health becomes increasingly important.
There are exercises that you may have done when you were younger that may not be safe to do as you get older. This may be due to mobility issues or putting more stress on your joints. If an exercise causes you pain or discomfort, stop doing it and replace it with another similar exercise that is good for your joints.
Prioritize cardio over strength training
Cardio is important for heart health, burning calories, and improving endurance. However, strength training should not be overlooked. As you age, you lose muscle mass and bone density at a faster rate. Regular strength training helps build and maintain muscle.
Ignore flexibility
Besides trying to maintain muscle and doing exercises that are gentle on your joints, one bad exercise habit to break is not working on mobility and flexibility.
In addition to losing lean mass as you age, you also lose range of motion and flexibility. It is important to incorporate stretching, mobility exercises, and yoga to improve flexibility and range of motion.
