People with kidney failure often have difficulty filtering and eliminating toxins, so their diet must be strictly controlled to avoid further damage to the kidneys. Some foods can increase the pressure on the kidneys, making the condition worse, according to the National Kidney Foundation.
1. Foods rich in sodium (salt)
Consuming too much salt causes the body to retain water, increase blood pressure and damage blood vessels in the kidneys. People with kidney failure should limit salty dishes, canned foods, fast food, bottled sauces and snacks high in salt.
2. Potassium-rich foods
Potassium is an essential mineral, but when the kidneys are impaired in function, it will be difficult to excrete, increasing potassium levels in the blood, which is dangerous for the cardiovascular system. People with kidney failure should limit eating bananas, sweet potatoes, potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, and other potassium-rich fruits.
3. Foods rich in phosphorus
High phosphorus increases the risk of calcifications in blood vessels and bones, negatively affecting overall health. Foods high in phosphorus include nuts, milk, cheese, carbonated soft drinks and dairy products.
4. Red meat and foods rich in animal protein
Eating a lot of red meat increases ure waste production, causing the kidneys to work harder. People with kidney failure should limit beef, pork and red meat, prioritize plant protein or white fish in moderation.
5. Alcoholic beverages and caffeine
Alcohol and coffee cause dehydration, increase blood pressure and impair kidney function more quickly. People with kidney failure should avoid or minimize the use of these drinks.
