Protecting our eyes from the effects of aging is not only about preserving vision, but also about maintaining quality of life and independence as we age.
There are simple but effective steps that can slow this process and maintain healthy vision into your later years.
Dr Narendra Singh, an ophthalmologist at Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital Kaushambi (India), said that there are many signs of premature aging in the eyes, including difficulty focusing on near objects (presbyopia), blurred vision or an increased need for reading glasses.
Another sign is dry eyes. Decreased tear production can lead to dryness, irritation, or a gritty feeling in your eyes. As your skin loses elasticity, you may also notice more dark circles or puffiness.
The skin around the eyes is very fragile and often shows fine lines and wrinkles. Difficulty seeing clearly in low light or at night is also a sign of aging in the eyes.
You may see more glare and discomfort. The sclera (the white part of the eye) may turn yellow and the lens of the eye may become cloudy, which can signal conditions such as cataracts.
Although these phenomena can occur at any age, they may also be associated with changes in the vitreous or retina and are more common with aging.
6 tips you should do to prevent aging eyes recommended by Dr. Singh are as follows:
1. Wear sunglasses
Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays by wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. This can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration.
2. Eye drops
To combat dry eyes, use lubricating eye drops regularly, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of a screen or in a dry environment.
3. Maintain a healthy diet
Eat a diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can support eye health. Think leafy greens, carrots, nuts, and fish.
4. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water to keep your body and eyes hydrated. Dehydration can cause dry, irritated eyes.
5. Practice the 20-20-20 rule
To reduce screen eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
6. Regular eye exams
Regular eye exams with an eye care professional can help catch any problems early and keep your eyes healthy. They can provide personalized advice based on your eye health and needs.
