Doctors warn of severe burns from gas cylinder explosion incident

Ho Chi Minh City - A 25-year-old young man suffered burns to about 60% of his body area after a gas cylinder explosion while working in the kitchen area.

The patient was transferred to the hospital in a state of deep burns, injuries to many areas of the body and at high risk of infection.

BSCK2 Mai Van Minh, Head of Internal Medicine Department, Minh Anh International General Hospital said that on August 24, the Emergency Department received patient Y.D (25 years old) after a gas cylinder explosion accident.

The patient suffered burns to the face, chest, back, arms and legs, with a burn area of about 60% of the body. The injury is assessed as deep burns, with a high risk of infection and complications.

According to family members, about 2 days before being hospitalized, when Y.D was working in the kitchen area, the gas cylinder suddenly exploded. The fire flared up quickly, causing the victim to not have time to avoid it. After being given first aid locally, the patient was transferred to the hospital for further treatment.

BSCK1 Huynh Van Tuan, Minh Anh International General Hospital, said that the patient suffered deep grade III burns, widespread damage, accompanied by the risk of shock and infection.

Immediately upon admission, the emergency team focused on stabilizing respiration, circulation, pain relief, intravenous fluids and electrolyte replacement. The patient was given antibiotics, nutritional support and treatment of burn injuries. Doctors performed excision, cleaning and care for the wound, then treated the patient in an isolation room to limit the risk of infection.

After 2 days of intensive treatment, the patient's condition showed signs of improvement. The wound was dry, without discharge, no pneumonia was recorded, circulation was stable and the patient could eat and drink by mouth.

However, doctors believe that the treatment process will still be prolonged due to the large burn area and deep damage. Patients may have to be treated for many weeks, while facing the risk of infection, complications and later sequelae.

According to BSCK2 Mai Van Minh, incidents related to gas cylinders are one of the causes that can cause very severe burns. Just a gas leak or carelessness during use can lead to fire and explosion in a short time.

To limit accidents, people need to regularly check gas cylinders, lock valves, wires and kitchen systems; do not use old, damaged or unknown origin gas cylinders.

When a burn occurs, with mild injuries, it is necessary to quickly cool the burn area with clean water. People should not arbitrarily apply toothpaste, fish sauce, python bile or other substances to the wound because it can increase the risk of infection and cause difficulties for the treatment process.

In cases of wide-area burns, deep burns or burns in the face and airway, patients need to be taken to a medical facility as soon as possible for timely assessment and treatment.
