Baby girl born with 9 umbilical cords wrapped around her neck

The 2.5kg baby girl was born healthy despite facing an extremely rare challenge of having nine umbilical cords wrapped around her neck.

On December 15, at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the pregnant woman D.T.M.L, 29 years old, pregnant for the second time, was admitted to the hospital in labor at more than 37 weeks. When performing a cesarean section, the team led by Master, Doctor, II Nguyen Xuan Hai - Head of the Department of Gynecology and Endocrinology A1 discovered that the baby had 9 umbilical cord loops tightly wrapped around the neck. This was a very dangerous situation, requiring the team to quickly untangle and cut off each umbilical cord loop to rescue the baby.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Hai, who directly performed the cesarean section, said: The case of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck so many times is extremely rare. It can reduce blood flow to the fetus, leading to severe malnutrition, even loss of fetal heart rate at any time. Therefore, the decision to perform a cesarean section in this case was very timely and fortunate for both mother and child.

Doctors recommend that pregnant women should have regular check-ups or follow the doctor's appointment and go for a check-up immediately if there are any unusual signs. During labor, if the fetus has the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck, the doctor will advise and monitor the birth to detect any abnormalities early for appropriate treatment.
