On March 14, doctors at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital welcomed a special baby boy weighing up to 5,860 grams, far exceeding the average weight of a full-term newborn (about 2,800–3,500 grams). This is considered one of the rare cases of large fetuses at the hospital.
Pregnant woman N.T. M. H. (29 years old, Hanoi) was hospitalized when the fetus was 38 weeks old. This is the second birth of the pregnant woman and before that she had had a cesarean section. During pregnancy, doctors discovered that the pregnant woman had gestational diabetes, but blood sugar control was not really stable, causing the fetus to develop beyond normal levels.
Upon admission, through examination and evaluation, doctors found that the fetus was very large, and at the same time, the pregnant woman developed pain in the old surgical scar area, posing a potential risk of scar reduction and dangerous complications. Faced with this situation, the medical team decided to prescribe proactive cesarean section surgery to ensure safety for both mother and baby.
The surgery was performed by MSc.BSCKII Nguyen Bien Thuy - Head of the Department of Voluntary Obstetrics and Gynecology Examination, along with a team of doctors from Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. After birth, the baby cried loudly, rosy, weighing 5,860 grams, making the whole team surprised.
According to obstetricians, fetuses weighing over 4,000 grams have been classified as large fetuses, while cases from 5,000 grams or more are very rare. These cases need to be closely monitored during pregnancy, especially in pregnant women with gestational diabetes or old surgical scars, so that doctors can develop a suitable birth plan, minimizing complications for mother and baby.
Currently, the health of both mother and child is stable. The baby is being continuously monitored and cared for by doctors at the hospital.
