On May 4, according to a report from the Dak Lak Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC), a case of a child patient dying suspected of rabies in Krong Nang commune has just been recorded in the area.
This is the 2nd death suspected of rabies since the beginning of the year.
The patient is a boy named Y.J. P. H. D (born in 2021, residing in Krong Nang commune). Previously, on April 30, when at home, the child showed symptoms such as fatigue, fear of light, fear of wind, poor appetite, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
On May 2nd, the patient was taken to the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital for examination and treatment. Here, the patient was diagnosed with: Fever of unknown cause, monitoring convulsions due to fever.
By May 3, the disease progressed severely, prognosis of death. The family asked for the child to be discharged home. Diagnosis upon discharge included: Septic shock, sepsis causing multiple organ damage, gastrointestinal bleeding, encephalitis - meningitis, rabies monitoring and grade IV respiratory failure. On the same day, the patient died at home.
According to family members, about 4 months before being hospitalized, the child had been scratched on the right forearm by a cat about 6 months old; this cat was then sold and could not be tracked.
About 3 months ago, the child was bitten by a dog and slipped skin in the abdomen; currently the dog is still alive.
After recording a suspected rabies death, the Dak Lak Provincial CDC coordinated with relevant medical units to conduct an epidemiological investigation, verify risk factors and the patient's history of exposure.
