According to Dr. Tran Thi Mong Trinh - Department of Endocrinology, Thu Duc City Hospital, the number of patients coming for examination and treatment of hyperthyroidism is on the rise. This disease is getting younger, mainly concentrated in the age group of 20-50, in which most of them are young women.
The early stages of hyperthyroidism often have no obvious symptoms or are easily confused with other diseases. However, patients need to pay special attention when showing signs such as heat afraid, hot skin, increased sweating, mild fever 37.5 - 38 degrees Celsius.
Other symptoms include chest drumsticks, nervousness, shortness of breath when emotive or exercised; restlessness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, irritability; throbbing of the fingers; menstrual disorder in women; thin skin, brittle and weak hair; painless diarrhea; rapid weight loss despite eating normally.
In particular, with Basedow disease, patients may also have eye problems such as blistering, watery eyes, burning, and Vucked eyes.
"Among the causes of hyperthyroidism, Basedow disease accounts for the highest rate with more than 70% of cases. The disease occurs when antibodies in the blood activate the thyroid gland, causing the thyroid to develop and secrete too many hormones. Factors such as immune disorders, prolonged stress and smoking are considered the main causes of the disease" - Dr. Trinh said.
Early detection and treatment of this disease plays a decisive role in limiting complications, helping to improve the quality of life for patients.
To effectively prevent, Dr. Trinh recommends that people, especially women over the age of 20, should regularly have their thyroid disease examined and screened.
At the same time, maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, adequate iodine supplementation, and building a balanced diet with foods rich in antioxidants such as fruits and green vegetables. Limit the use of processed foods, fried foods, and alcoholic or stimulant beverages.
