The female patient, 23 years old, from Tay Ninh province, was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe facial injuries after a motorbike accident. Previously, the patient fell and hit her face on the road, causing bruising of the forehead - temple and left eyelid. After the accident, the patient self-monitored at home, but about three days later, the wound turned black and oozed fluid, so she was taken to the Emergency Department of People's Hospital 115.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Chi, Department of Odonto-Stomatology - Ophthalmology, People's Hospital 115, after admission, the patient was transferred to the Department of Odonto-Stomatology - Ophthalmology for in-depth evaluation. Through clinical examination and paraclinical tests, doctors recorded that the patient's facial skin was crushed, poor irrigation, accompanied by signs of progressive skin necrosis.
According to doctors, the injury not only seriously affects facial aesthetics but also poses a risk of infection, spreading the injury, and even affecting eye function and overall health if not treated promptly. Faced with this situation, patients are prescribed intensive treatment, including wound care, antibiotic use, infection control and tissue preservation assessment.
The microsurgery unit of the Department of Trauma Surgery coordinated with the Department of Odonto-Stomatology - Ophthalmology, People's Hospital 115 to consult, assess the extent of the injury and choose the appropriate surgical method. After a comprehensive assessment, the doctors decided to perform excision of the entire necrotic tissue, clean the injured area and perform skin grafting.
The skin graft is taken from the patient's abdomen, then grafted onto the damaged face area to cover the skin defect, while contributing to preserving facial function and aesthetics. The surgery took place smoothly, no complications were recorded during and immediately after surgery.
After surgery, the patient was closely monitored and cared for the graft according to the correct procedure. Through the monitoring process, the graft skin developed well, rosy, with no signs of infection or secondary necrosis. The patient's overall condition was stable, eye function was preserved and the wound progressed to healing well.
Doctors said that the skin graft result was considered successful, contributing importantly to the restoration of facial aesthetics as well as improving the quality of life for patients after injuries.
This case also shows the important role of early treatment of injuries after traffic accidents. The combination of multi-specialized treatment and application of skin grafting techniques has helped effectively treat complex injuries, limit the risk of complications and help patients recover better," Dr. Bich Chi added.
