Just a few hours after officially receiving the patient, Bach Mai Hospital Ninh Binh facility successfully performed the first surgery, saving a man with severe spinal injury, facing the risk of paralysis of both legs after a work accident.
At 10:30 PM on June 26, the operating room at Bach Mai Hospital, Ninh Binh facility, was lit up. This was the first surgery performed at the new facility, marking a special milestone on the first day the hospital received patients.
The patient is Mr. C.M. Q (51 years old, residing in Nam Dinh ward, Ninh Binh province). According to his family, at about 4 pm on the same day, while working, Mr. Q unfortunately fell from a ladder about 2m high to the ground. After the accident, the patient had severe pain in the lower back and buttocks, numbness, and weakness in both legs, so his family took him to Bach Mai Hospital, Ninh Binh branch.
The patient was admitted to the hospital only about an hour after the accident. Immediately upon admission, doctors urgently examined, performed tests and image diagnosis. The results determined that the patient had a broken L3 lumbar vertebrae, unstable, nerve compression, causing paralysis of both lower limbs - particularly serious injury, with the risk of permanent paralysis if not intervened in time.
After consulting with experts from Bach Mai Hospital, the treatment team fully explained the disease status, prognosis as well as treatment options to the family. As soon as they received consent, the patient was indicated for emergency surgery immediately that night.
About 5 hours after being admitted to the hospital, the patient was transferred to the operating room.
The surgery lasted more than 2 hours overnight with the goal of relieving nerve pressure, adjusting and fitting the spine, creating maximum conditions to restore motor function for the patient.
According to BSCKII Nguyen Duc Hoang, Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Spine, the decisive factor in the success of the surgery is that the patient was brought to the hospital very early after the accident and was operated on immediately in the "golden time".
For spinal cord injuries with nerve compression, time is the decisive factor for recovery ability. The patient was brought to the hospital early, diagnosed quickly, consulted promptly and had emergency surgery, which helped minimize secondary damage to the spinal cord and nerve roots. After surgery, the patient moved both legs, which is a very positive sign for the next recovery process," said BSCKII. Nguyen Duc Hoang.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Thuy, Deputy Director of the Center for Anesthesia and Resuscitation, shared: This is the first surgery of Bach Mai Hospital, Ninh Binh facility, and all preparations have been thoroughly completed before the opening day. Close coordination between specialties from emergency, diagnostic imaging, testing, surgery to anesthesia and resuscitation has helped the surgery to take place safely, on schedule and achieve the expected results.
After surgery, the patient was awake, hemodynamically stable, could move both legs and was transferred to the Surgery Department for continued monitoring and treatment.
Doctors assess that postoperative developments are progressing positively. If the recovery and functional rehabilitation process is favorable, patients have many hopes of regaining mobility and returning to normal life.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that the success of the first surgery on the first night of operation confirms that Bach Mai Hospital in Ninh Binh is ready to receive, provide emergency care and treat severe cases with professional quality equivalent to the main facility in Hanoi.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Co, bringing specialized medical techniques to localities will help people in Ninh Binh and neighboring provinces receive emergency care in "golden time", increasing chances of saving lives, recovery and reducing the burden on central hospitals.
