Signs of hypothyroidism in men

THIỆN NHÂN (THEO ONLYMYHEALTH) |

Hypothyroidism in men can cause a variety of symptoms that affect physical and mental health, says Dr. Chhavi Agrawal.

What is hypothyroidism?

“Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough thyroid hormones. These hormones play a vital role in regulating your mood, breathing, and even your heart rate. They are also essential for brain functions, including learning and memory. Therefore, when the thyroid gland is underactive, many functions of your body are affected,” says Dr Chhavi Agrawal, Associate Consultant, Endocrinology, Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi (India).

Common signs of hypothyroidism in men

Fatigue and weakness: Men with hypothyroidism often feel tired, lack energy, and have a loss of strength, even after adequate rest. Daily activities may become more difficult.

Weight gain: Hypothyroidism can slow down metabolism, leading to unexplained weight gain, especially in the abdominal area.

Poor memory and difficulty concentrating: Men with hypothyroidism may have difficulty remembering information, concentrating on work, or thinking clearly.

Sleep disturbances: Despite feeling tired, hypothyroidism can cause difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

Dry skin and hair loss: Skin may become dry and rough, while hair loss may be more than usual.

Sensitivity to cold: Men with hypothyroidism often feel cold even when the surrounding temperature is normal or hot to others. The skin on the hands and feet may be cold and pale.

Decreased libido: One of the signs of hypothyroidism is decreased libido due to hormonal changes and the impact of the disease on mental health.

Difficulty maintaining heart health: Hypothyroidism can slow your heart rate, while also causing problems with blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

Increased cholesterol levels and blood pressure: Hypothyroidism can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood and increase blood pressure, especially diastolic blood pressure.

Irritability and depression: Men with hypothyroidism may feel anxious, depressed, or irritable. This is because a lack of thyroid hormone affects chemicals in the brain.

How to control hypothyroidism in men

According to Dr. Agrawal, diet and lifestyle changes play an important role in controlling hypothyroidism. Some habits to adopt include:

Incorporate iodine-rich foods like seaweed and seafood.

Eat a balanced diet with adequate selenium and zinc.

Exercise regularly.

Healthy weight management.

Practice stress management techniques, such as yoga or meditation.
