Soy wax is popular due to its safety and environmental friendliness
Homemade fragrant candles are becoming a trend loved by many families thanks to their personalization, cost savings and environmental friendliness. Among them, soy wax is a popular ingredient because it creates less soot and is of natural origin.
According to Jasmine Gurney - a craftsman and lifestyle expert in the UK - traditional paraffin wax originates from oil and can create black smoke when burned. Meanwhile, soy wax burns slower, has less smoke and is more biodegradable.
To make fragrant candles at home, users need to prepare soy wax, heat-resistant glass cups, candle holders, fragrant essential oils and water-insulating heating equipment.
Experts recommend warming glass cups before pouring hot wax to limit the risk of cracking due to sudden temperature changes.
Note the temperature and time for candles to achieve good quality
After fixing the candlestick to the bottom of the glass, soy wax is melted at about 80 degrees C and then mixed with essential oils. Jasmine Gurney said that the amount of essential oil should account for about 6-10% of the total candle weight so that the scent spreads moderately.
When the wax cools to about 50 degrees Celsius, users can start pouring it into glass cups. Then, the candle needs to be left to dry naturally for about a week so that the wax and fragrance are completely stable.
In addition to essential oils, many people also add dried flowers to increase aesthetics. However, experts note that dried flowers need to be removed before burning to avoid the risk of fire.
Jasmine Gurney also recommends cutting the candlesticks short before each use to keep the fire burning evenly and limit black smoke.
Experts believe that homemade scented candles not only help save costs but are also a personal handicraft gift, suitable for many special occasions.
