What is a stone apple?
The stone apple, nungu, is the fruit of the palmyra palm tree, which has a cooling effect on the body. It is found in the coastal regions of India during the summer season and is known by various names such as nungu, tadgola, taal and thaati nungu, depending on the region. The size and colour of the fruit is quite similar to that of an eggplant.
The nungu stone apple has a sweet taste, transparent flesh and delicious flavor. The texture of this fruit is quite similar to young coconut, the flesh of the fruit is like transparent ice cubes.
How to make dishes from nhunu rock apple
Rose Apple Ice Milk
Ingredient:
- 1 ice apple
- 30 - 45 grams of basil seeds
- 15ml rose syrup
- 200ml milk
- 15ml sugar
- Soak basil seeds in milk and refrigerate until the seeds swell.
- Peel the apple and cut into small pieces, set aside.
- When the basil seed milk is ready, add rose syrup and sugar, mix well
- Now add the chopped ice apples and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Enjoy the food while it's cold.
Nungu payasam:
Ingredient:
- 200 grams of nuongu apples
- 250ml boiled milk
- 30ml sugar water
- 12 blanched almonds
- 2 cardamom pods
- A few strands of saffron (quantity optional)
Making:
- Peel the nhuu apples and cut them into bite-sized pieces, set aside.
- Take blanched almonds and cardamom and grind into a smooth mixture.
- Add the freshly blended mixture to the milk and simmer over low heat until the mixture thickens.
- Now add sugar, mix well and continue stirring over low heat for about 3 - 4 minutes.
- Remove mixture from heat and let cool completely.
- Add chopped nhuu apples and mix well.
- Refrigerate the food.
- Garnish with saffron threads and enjoy the dish while it's still cold.
