6-year-old child dies after more than 3 months of being bitten by dog

Quang Tri - A 6-year-old child died suspected of rabies after being bitten on the finger by a dog but was not treated for the wound and vaccinated against the disease.

On March 10, the Quang Tri Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that a death related to rabies had just been recorded in the area.

The victim is C.G. H (born in 2020, residing in hamlet 1, Kim Phu commune). According to information from the family, in December 2025, the child was bitten on the finger by a dog but no one witnessed it.

After being bitten by a dog, the child was not treated for the injury and was not vaccinated against rabies. In the three months that followed, the child did not show any abnormalities.

By the afternoon of March 9, 2026, the patient suddenly developed symptoms such as vomiting, foaming at the mouth, and irritation, so he was taken to Minh Hoa Regional General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Here, the patient was diagnosed with meningitis, rabies not ruled out and was transferred to Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital at 7:50 pm on the same day.

According to records of the medical facility, when admitted to the hospital, the baby was in a drowsy, agitated state, pink skin and mucous membranes, soft abdomen but vomiting continuously.

Doctors diagnosed and monitored meningitis, monitored rabies caused by dog bites and transferred the patient to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for further treatment.

At about 8:30 pm on the same day, the patient showed many typical symptoms of rabies such as increased phlegm secretion, drowsiness and agitation, fear of light, fear of wind, fear of sounds and fear of water.

At 10:00 PM on March 9, 2026, the patient stopped breathing, stopped heartbeat. After being resuscitated by doctors, the patient's heart beat again.

However, the family later asked to take the patient home. On the way home, the baby died.

According to the leader of the Quang Tri Provincial CDC, through initial verification, functional agencies have not recorded any other cases of being bitten by the above-mentioned dog other than this case.

The Provincial CDC has requested the Minh Hoa Regional Health Center to coordinate with the Sub-Department of Animal Health and departments, branches, and mass organizations in the locality to review households raising dogs and cats.

At the same time, strengthen propaganda to help people manage their livestock well, proactively vaccinate against rabies and handle it promptly when bitten by dogs and cats.
