A protein-rich diet can be harmful if applied incorrectly

A protein-rich diet is chosen by many people to lose weight and gain muscle, but self-application can pose many health risks.

In recent years, a protein-rich diet has become a trend that many people pursue to lose weight, gain muscle or improve their figure. However, according to experts, increasing the amount of protein too much or applying this diet without professional guidance can lead to many health problems.

Dr. Sandeep Reddy Koppula, Head of Internal Medicine, Arete Hospital (Hyderabad, India), said that more and more people are starting a protein-rich diet after watching fitness content on social networks or following online menus without assessing their health status.

According to him, one of the common impacts is dehydration. When the body metabolizes protein, the kidneys have to work harder to excrete nitrogen-containing metabolic products, causing water demand to increase. If you do not supplement enough water, people who follow a diet rich in protein may experience fatigue, headache, dizziness, constipation and reduced exercise effectiveness.

Another risk is fiber deficiency. Many people cut back on green vegetables, fruits and whole grains to prioritize meat, eggs or protein supplements. This can lead to constipation, bloating, digestive disorders and imbalance of the intestinal microbiome.

Dr. Koppula said that people with normal kidney function can usually tolerate moderate increases in protein. However, people with kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or underdeveloped kidney function are not found to be at risk of complications if they arbitrarily adopt a diet that is too high in protein, especially when using supplements.

Many people also mistakenly believe that eating a lot of protein will automatically help lose weight. In fact, if the total energy intake still exceeds the body's needs, weight can still increase. Protein drinks, protein bars or peanut butter still contain a significant amount of calories if used too much.

In addition, a diet high in red meat and processed meat can increase uric acid levels in people at risk, thereby increasing the likelihood of joint pain or gout.

Besides physical effects, focusing too much on protein can also create psychological pressure. Some people become obsessed with calculating protein intake, eating times, or using supplements, thereby limiting family and friend meals.

According to Dr. Sandeep Reddy Koppula, protein is a necessary nutrient for maintaining muscle mass, tissue recovery and metabolism. However, a healthy diet needs to ensure a balance between protein, fiber, green vegetables, fruits, drinks and physical activity.

Experts recommend that before changing diet or using protein-rich supplements, people should consult a doctor or nutritionist. Building a diet suitable for their health condition will help take advantage of the benefits of protein while limiting risks to the body.
