The study was conducted by an international scientific team, led by researchers from Zhejiang University of Medicine (China) on 1,647 middle-aged and elderly people for about 12 years. The results showed that people who followed the MIND diet had lower levels of brain tissue loss, especially gray matter, the important part related to memory and thinking.
This group also recorded less ventricular dilation, a sign that the rate of brain atrophy slowed down. According to scientists, people who strictly adhere to the MIND diet have a slower brain aging rate of about 2.5 years.
The MIND diet combines the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, focusing on green vegetables, berries, nuts, fish and healthy foods, while limiting fried foods and bad fats.
Researchers believe that foods rich in antioxidants and high-quality protein can help reduce neurological damage. Conversely, fast food and foods high in bad fats can increase inflammation and affect the brain.
Although the direct causal relationship has not been proven, this result continues to strengthen the link between diet and brain health, especially in reducing the risk of cognitive decline and diseases such as Alzheimer's.
