On the afternoon of September 3, Dr. Chung Tan Dinh - Director of Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital - said that the hospital had just successfully operated on P.T.H (52 months old, residing in Tran De commune, Can Tho city) in a state of septic shock, peritoneal inflammation due to perforation of many intestines.
The child was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain, bloating, and strong vomiting, showing signs of severe infection.
Through examination, the doctor discovered many foreign objects in the digestive tract. The surgical team removed 4 chamomile batteries, 6 magnetic lenses and 1 foreign object suspected to be a fish bone; at the same time, 5 intestinal holes were removed and the section of the intestines were cut off.
After the surgery, the child's health is stable, recovered well and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
Dr. Dinh commented that this is one of the complicated pediatric digestive surgeries that Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has successfully performed, demonstrating professional capacity as well as close coordination between departments.
Mr. Dinh said that recently, the hospital has continuously received cases of young children hospitalized for swallowing foreign objects such as hair, acupressure, fish bones, and watch batteries. This is a dangerous situation because foreign objects can get stuck in the digestive tract, causing intestinal perforation, peritoneal inflammation, and even life-threatening if not handled promptly.
