Hung Yen Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has just coordinated with Thai Binh Children's Hospital to successfully perform surgery to save the life of patient P.B.N (45 months old, residing in Ninh Binh) who had a blockage and perforation of the small intestine due to swallowing a magnet foreign object.
The child was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, with severe abdominal pain, frequent vomiting, and a tight abdomen. X-ray results showed a metal foreign object in the abdomen, suspected to be a magnet - a foreign object that can cause serious damage when the pieces suck together through the wall of the intestines.
The surgery was performed under the direct direction of Dr. Vu Thi Thanh Huyen - Director of Hung Yen Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. The team opened the abdomen and discovered many locations of the small intestines with small magnetic pieces attracting each other, causing compression and necrosis of intestinal tissue. Doctors removed the foreign object and safely repaired the intestinal damage.
After surgery, thanks to close monitoring and active post-operative care, the patient's health was stable, eating and exercising lightly after 4 days of treatment.
The surgery was successful thanks to the close professional coordination between the two units. At the same time, this is also a warning to parents about protecting their children from the dangers of toys containing magnetes, chamomile batteries and sharp items.
According to recommendations from Hung Yen Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, small foreign objects such as magnetes, chamomile batteries or toys with colored edges can easily be dangerous if the child swallows right, which can lead to bloating, intestinal perforation and many other serious complications.
Parents should pay special attention not to let children play alone with these items. As soon as the child shows symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting a lot, bloating... it is necessary to take them to a medical facility for timely examination and intervention.
