Saving a 4-year-old boy in critical condition due to bacteria eating human meat

Nghe An - A 4-year-old boy with Whitmore disease (also known as flesh-eating bacteria) was promptly treated by Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and overcome the critical condition.

On September 16, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the unit's Dentistry had just successfully treated patient D.A.K. (born 2021, residing in Tan Mai ward) has Whitmore disease.

Previously, the child had symptoms of prolonged high fever, swelling and pain in the right ear, treatment in the lower limb did not improve and was transferred to the hospital in critical condition.

Doctors diagnosed the child with inflammation spreading to the ear area and monitored for sepsis. The child underwent fecal surgery, was planted with bacteria and tested positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei - the cause of Whitmore disease.

After the antibiotic treatment according to the regimen, surgical wound care, and improvement of the patient's physical condition, the health of the child has stabilized.

BSCKI. Nguyen Quang Ha - Dentistry Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital warned: whitemore disease is an acute infectious disease, the mortality rate can be up to 40-60%. Severe cases can die within a week from the date of the outbreak.

Doctors recommend that there is currently no vaccine against Whitmore disease. People, especially children, need to limit contact with mud and polluted water during the changing seasons - favorable conditions for bacteria to grow. Workers who are regularly exposed to soil and water need to be equipped with protective equipment, wash their wounds with antibacterial soap and immediately go to medical facilities when there are suspicious signs.
