Many young people have to go to the emergency room because of strokes.
Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Uyen, Emergency Department (108 Central Military Hospital) said that recently, the hospital has received consecutive stroke patients. Male patient D.V.D (45 years old, Hanoi) with no medical history suddenly fell into a coma after bathing late at night. Diagnosis showed cerebral hemorrhage with a 90cm³ hematoma, requiring open craniotomy to relieve pressure. Another case, patient N.X.K (42 years old, Hai Duong) after bathing at night suddenly had a headache, decreased consciousness and then fell into a coma. Despite timely emergency care, the brain hemorrhage was so severe that the patient could not survive. Both cases were young people, without underlying diseases but suffered severe strokes after sudden exposure to cold.
At Bach Mai Hospital, Master, Doctor Nguyen Minh Anh - Stroke Center (Bach Mai Hospital) - said that the number of hospitalizations at the center during Tet and the first days of work increased dramatically, many cases were severe with complex disorders.
A 46-year-old male patient (Cau Giay District, Hanoi) was admitted to the hospital on the 29th of Tet (January 28) with symptoms of hemiplegia and difficulty speaking. The patient had a history of high blood pressure but was not treated regularly. After drinking alcohol at lunch, the patient began to experience the above symptoms. X-ray results at Bach Mai Hospital determined that the patient had a brain hemorrhage, which was progressing severely with a high risk of other disorders. After 5-6 days of active treatment, the patient's muscle strength gradually improved.
At the A9 Emergency Center (Bach Mai Hospital), about 200 cases are received each day, but during Tet and after, this number exceeds 300. MSc. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Binh - A9 Emergency Center - said that this year, the number of hospitalizations due to traffic accidents and alcohol has decreased, but cardiovascular and respiratory diseases have increased, mainly due to cold weather.
Doctors explain increased risk of stroke
According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Uyen, cold weather not only causes blood vessels to constrict, increasing blood pressure, but also increases the risk of blood clots, leading to both hemorrhagic stroke and cerebral infarction. In particular, the habit of bathing late at night - a common problem in Vietnam - has become the cause of many unfortunate cases.
"The number of strokes increased sharply on Tet holiday due to many factors.
Notably, the number of stroke cases in young people under 50 years old accounts for 40%. The main cause is subjective psychology, lack of regular health check-ups, not thinking that they are at risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. Unscientific lifestyle, heavy use of alcohol, fast food, greasy foods, along with the trend of using stimulants such as crystal meth, marijuana, and e-cigarettes also increase the risk of stroke in young people.
The risk of stroke increases during Tet due to changes in living habits: Uncontrolled eating, consuming a lot of salt, fat, lack of exercise, smoking, being overweight, all of which increase the risk of stroke, especially when many people ignore the doctor's recommendations... Cold weather: When the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius, blood vessels constrict, causing high blood pressure, blood thickens and easily forms blood clots; Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption during Tet increases blood pressure, heart rhythm disturbances, causing cerebrovascular accidents and the risk of sudden stroke; Forgetting to take medication: The long holiday causes many people to forget to check their health, not prepare enough medication, leading to dangerous complications, even stroke.
