Tet emergency: Stroke, cardiovascular disease increase, traffic accidents decrease

Lệ Hà |

During Tet, the number of emergency and stroke patients at Bach Mai Hospital increased dramatically, about 30-40% higher than usual.

Younger stroke patients on the rise

Right from the first days of the new year, at the A9 Emergency Center, doctors and nurses continuously received patients transferred from lower levels with many serious conditions.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Minh Anh - Stroke Center, Bach Mai Hospital said that the number of patients hospitalized due to stroke during and after Tet increased significantly, with many cases having complicated developments. In particular, the proportion of young patients under 50 years old accounted for 45% of the hospitalizations.

“Young people are often subjective about their health and rarely have regular check-ups, while many cases have underlying diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes but are not detected early. In addition, unscientific living habits such as drinking alcohol, using fried foods, staying up late and even abusing stimulants such as crystal meth, marijuana or e-cigarettes also increase the risk of stroke” - Master, Doctor Nguyen Minh Anh emphasized.

Stroke after drinking on 29th of Tet

Recorded at the Stroke Center, a 46-year-old male patient (residing in Cau Giay, Hanoi) was admitted to the hospital on the 29th of Tet due to hemiplegia and difficulty speaking. Previously, the patient had a history of high blood pressure but did not comply with treatment. After drinking alcohol at lunch, he suddenly had symptoms of a stroke. The results of the scan at Bach Mai Hospital showed that the patient had a 3ml brain hemorrhage, with a high risk of other disorders.

Thanks to timely intervention, after 5-6 days of intensive treatment, the patient's condition improved and his muscle strength gradually recovered. This is one of many stroke cases that doctors have had to work hard to treat in the first days of the new year.

Tet Emergency: Fewer traffic accidents, more cardiovascular and respiratory diseases

Not only stroke, the number of patients with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases also increases during Tet.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Binh - A9 Emergency Center - said: "Compared to previous years, the number of traffic accidents and alcohol poisoning cases has decreased, but cardiovascular and respiratory diseases have increased sharply, mainly due to cold weather and patients not following treatment regimens. Many chronic patients arbitrarily stopped taking their medication and ate irregularly during Tet, leading to hospitalization in critical condition."

According to doctors at the A9 Emergency Center, the number of patients during Tet and the first days of spring has increased compared to previous years. The Center receives 200 patients every day, but during and after Tet, the number increases to more than 300 patients. Patients are transferred from lower levels and many patients who "could not hold out" after Tet are hospitalized in large numbers.

“Tet for us is no longer family reunions but long shifts, taking turns to ensure patients receive timely treatment. This year, the number of patients has increased sharply, making doctors and nurses more stressed, but thanks to prior planning, we are still able to ensure medical examination and treatment for people,” shared Master, Doctor of Medicine Nguyen Nhu Binh.

According to statistics from January 25 to February 3 (ie from December 26 to the 6th day of Tet), Bach Mai Hospital received 3,703 patients, of which 2,395 were emergency cases (accounting for 65%), 566 were stroke cases (15%), 408 were pediatric cases (11%) and 334 were other cases. The total number of hospitalized patients was 2,354, while the number of discharged patients was 1,405.
