Don't let subjectivity go with summer trips

For three consecutive weeks, the number of COVID-19 cases in Hanoi increased. At the same time, seasonal flu and some other respiratory diseases also recorded an increasing trend. What is worth thinking about is not the number of cases, but the cause of their increase. The health sector affirms that the epidemic is still under control, no new dangerous variants have appeared, and there are no signs of abnormalities in the number of severe cases or deaths. That is a reality that needs to be fully recognized: Not panicking, but also not allowed to be taken lightly.

According to the health sector, the peak of summer tourism is the time when the demand for travel, socializing and crowded gatherings increases sharply. Millions of people move through airports, train stations, bus stations, shopping centers, entertainment areas, hotels... Closed spaces using air conditioning and limited air circulation become favorable environments for viruses to spread.

That is a rule that has been warned for many years. Viruses do not "go on summer vacation", but humans accidentally carry viruses everywhere.

After many years of living with COVID-19, many people have considered this disease just as a common flu. When symptoms of cough, fever, sore throat appear, many people still get on planes, trains, still participate in tours or crowded meetings with the thought "I only have a mild cold".

That subjectivity may not have much impact on young, healthy people. But it is a danger to the elderly, young children, pregnant women or patients with chronic diseases. A person accidentally bringing germs to a public place can cause a whole family to cancel their vacation, even causing people with weak resistance to face severe complications.

COVID-19 once reminded us of the responsibility to protect our own health and the health of those around us. But when life returns to normal, many disease prevention habits are also gradually forgotten.

Masks almost disappear in crowded places. Many people still maintain the habit of going to work, school, and travel even when they have respiratory symptoms. Washing hands and covering their mouths when coughing or proactively limiting contact when sick - actions that were once considered a culture of behavior in the pandemic - are now underestimated.

Experts all agree that SARS-CoV-2 has become a circulating virus, similar to seasonal flu. This means that there will always be seasonal increases, especially when weather conditions and social activities create opportunities for the virus to spread. No more blockades or distancing as before, but it does not mean that the epidemic is completely behind.

The message from the Ministry of Health this time is also very clear: No panic, but absolutely no subjectivity.

The community should not panic when the number of cases increases, but needs to maintain effective disease prevention measures such as wearing masks, washing hands, keeping the space ventilated, resting when sick and protecting high-risk people.

A memorable vacation is not just beautiful photos or new destinations. More importantly, everyone returns healthy, does not bring the virus home, and does not accidentally turn their trip into a link in the disease transmission chain.
