Guiding lifestyle to limit irritable bowel syndrome

People with irritable bowel syndrome need to adjust their diet, exercise, sleep and manage stress to limit symptoms.

Irregular bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. Maintaining an appropriate diet, lifestyle, and monitoring can help control symptoms.

Adjusting diet

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of Surgery, Phuong Dong General Hospital, a diet low in FODMAP can help reduce some IBS symptoms. FODMAP is an indigestible carbohydrate group, found in some foods such as wheat, beans, lentils, onions, garlic, milk containing lactose, honey and some fruits. Patients should talk to a doctor or nutritionist before applying this diet for a long time.

Soluble fiber, such as psyllium, can support people with constipation with less bloating than some other types of fiber. Oats, flaxseed, green vegetables and some fruits are sources of fiber that can be added to the diet.

In addition, you should limit caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods or high-fat foods if these foods make symptoms worse. Keeping a diary helps patients recognize irritating foods. You should eat slowly, chew thoroughly and divide into small meals instead of eating too much at once.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Regular exercise can support bowel movements, reduce stress and improve mood. Walking, yoga or swimming are suitable activities. Patients should also maintain regular exercise time, suitable for their physical condition.

Stress can make IBS symptoms worse. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can support stress management. At the same time, maintaining a stable sleep schedule and getting enough sleep for about 7-8 hours each night is also beneficial for digestive health.

Monitor and treat properly

Patients should record the duration, frequency and severity of symptoms, and monitor the relationship with food and daily activities. When symptoms persist, change, or do not improve, gastroenterology specialists should be consulted.

IBS treatment methods may include dietary adjustments, probiotics, psychological support, and medication depending on symptoms. Patients should not arbitrarily use anticonvulsant, antidiarrheic, constipation medication or antidepressants, but should use them as prescribed by a doctor.

The combination of appropriate diet, exercise, sufficient sleep, stress management and adherence to treatment plans helps people with SMI control symptoms and improve quality of life.
