What is SGPT test?
Dr. Adithya V. Naragund, senior consultant in surgery at Cytecare Hospital, Bengaluru (India) - said that the SGPT index, also known as ALT, is a specific enzyme found in large quantities in liver cells.
The SGPT test, also known as the ALT test, measures the level of Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), which plays an important role in converting protein into energy, explains Dr. Naragund.
When liver cells are damaged or inflamed, ALT leaks into the blood, giving your doctor important signs about your liver's health.
Health care providers use the SGPT test to diagnose and monitor liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease, Naragund added. Elevated ALT levels can indicate liver damage or dysfunction, but can also be associated with other conditions such as muscle injury or heart disease.
Why is SGPT testing important before marriage?
Dr Naragund stressed the need for SGPT testing before marriage, as the test helps assess liver health, allowing both partners to be aware of any potential liver problems that could affect their future health.
“Liver diseases can be asymptomatic in the early stages and undiagnosed conditions can lead to serious health complications later. By getting a liver test done, couples can identify any liver dysfunction, facilitating timely medical intervention,” said Naragund.
He also points out that understanding one's liver health can prevent the transmission of infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and C - important factors for future marriage planning and family health.
Taking a proactive approach to liver health promotes trust between couples, ensuring a healthier start to married life.
Additionally, by incorporating SGPT testing into premarital health screenings, couples can make informed decisions about their future and prioritize their health, setting the stage for a happy and healthy marriage.
