Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital received a special obstetric case: The patient was a 20-year-old pregnant woman, admitted to the hospital when the pregnancy was determined to be about 31 weeks old. Through medical history, the patient said that she had only discovered she was pregnant about a week before the time of admission.
After knowing she was pregnant, due to lack of information and not going to a specialized medical facility for examination, the pregnant woman bought abortion pills to use at home. When taking the medicine but not seeing the desired results, the patient continued to use more medicine, with a total of about 10 pills.
When admitted to the hospital, the pregnant woman showed symptoms of abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Through examination, doctors recorded early labor, fetal decline and the risk of threatened uterine rupture - serious obstetric complications that could directly threaten the lives of both mother and fetus if not treated promptly.
Fortunately, the patient was detected and urgently intervened by BSCKII Pham Van Soan - Deputy Head of Department A2, BSCKI Dam Van Hung and the anesthesia and resuscitation team. Currently, the mother's health has stabilized, and the baby is being monitored and cared for in the Neonatal Department.
BSCKII Pham Van Soan said that this is not an isolated case. In fact, many young people today still lack knowledge about reproductive health, pregnancy and safe contraception methods. Many people tend to search for information online or handle it at home instead of going to specialized medical facilities for advice and proper support.
Each person needs to proactively equip themselves with knowledge about reproductive health, safe contraception measures as well as responsibilities in sexual relations. When pregnant, women need to be examined and monitored periodically at specialized medical facilities to be fully consulted on their pregnancy status and appropriate options.
Absolutely do not arbitrarily use drugs or apply any method to terminate pregnancy without examination and prescription from a specialist doctor. Arbitrarily using drugs can lead to many dangerous complications such as hemorrhage, infection, uterine rupture, threatening future fertility, and even affecting the patient's life," recommended BSCKII Pham Van Soan.
