Common treatments for migraines include over-the-counter painkillers, cold compresses, hydration and rest, says Dr Shiva Kumar R, Head of the Department of Neurology and Epilepsy at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru (India).
However, some people will also feel better through techniques such as relaxation, meditation or yoga.
Foot soaking to relieve migraines helps dilate blood vessels in the feet, improves blood circulation to the brain and helps relieve migraines.
“While hot foot soaks may help some people with pain, they are often less directly effective than medications and other treatments,” notes Dr. Shiva Kumar R.
Techniques to maximize the benefits of foot soaking
Dr Shiva Kumar R advises that while soaking your feet, you should ensure that the water is hot but not too hot.
Accordingly, the recommended temperature is about 100 - 110 degrees F (37 - 43 degrees C). Soak your feet for 15 - 20 minutes to allow the blood vessels to dilate sufficiently.
Use a large basin or foot bath to comfortably soak both feet. Add Epsom salts or essential oils such as lavender for added relaxation benefits. Sit comfortably, perhaps placing a cool compress on your forehead for contrast will help with the pain relief process.
Benefits of hot foot bath
Vasodilation: Soaking your feet in hot water dilates the blood vessels in your feet, which can help reduce blood flow to your head, potentially reducing the pressure and pain associated with migraines.
Regulates body temperature: Foot soaks can help regulate body temperature and have a soothing effect, helping to relax and relieve migraine symptoms.
Nervous system: Warm water can stimulate the nerves in the feet, which in turn send signals to the brain to help relieve pain and relax.
Potential risks and contraindications
Dr Shiva Kumar R advises you to be careful of the risks of trying this method which include:
Sensitive Skin: People with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema should be cautious as hot water can cause irritation or burns.
Circulatory problems: People with poor circulation, diabetes or neuropathy should avoid water that is too hot to avoid burns and complications.
Overuse: Soaking your feet in hot water frequently can lead to dry and irritated skin.
