You do not need to completely remove any food from your daily menu, but you should eat some types in moderation. We should limit animal organs and purine-rich seafood such as anchovies, tuna, sardines, herring, scallops... because they can increase the risk of gout attacks.
Meanwhile, some other seafood such as salmon, shrimp, lobster have lower levels of purines and can still be used in a reasonable amount. Red meat and poultry should also be limited to about 170 grams per day.
Although some types of fish can slightly increase uric acid, the benefits for the cardiovascular system when eating fish such as salmon and tuna are significant if eaten regularly.
Instead of consuming too much protein from meat, you can switch to healthier sources of protein such as eggs, low-fat milk, nuts, bean butter, soybeans and soy products. Each day, you can use up to two servings of low-fat milk without being too worried.
The American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP) also recommends limiting fruit juices and soft drinks containing fructose-rich corn syrup, as this substance increases uric acid production. Refined starch, especially sugar, should also be reduced.
In addition, alcohol and beer are factors that need special attention. Alcohol can increase uric acid levels in the blood, so it should be minimized. Some studies show that you can drink wine in moderation, but beer and strong alcohol should be avoided as much as possible.
In general, a balanced, diverse diet, limiting purin-rich foods, reducing sweets and alcohol will help control gout more effectively, and are also beneficial for overall health.
