At the end of October 2025, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received a special case: A father who was unfortunately in a state of brain death donated his kidneys to save his own son - D.N.K, a third-year student from the National Economics University.
K has chronic kidney failure and has had to undergo dialysis for two years. The family is in difficult circumstances and cannot afford to undergo a kidney transplant - the only treatment method to help K escape the life of dependence on a blood filtration machine. However, K persistently continued to study and receive treatment.
However, an unexpected incident happened: K's father had an accident, suffered from severe cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a state of brain death that could not be treated.
Facing extreme pain, K's mother - a preschool teacher - made a brave and humane decision: to donate her husband's organs and prioritize a kidney to save her son's life.
This decision not only shows the boundless love of a father for his children, but is also a noble gesture of a mother with the desire to keep her children's lives, turning them into hope.
Due to family difficulties, there was no previous assessment or preparation process for kidney transplantation. This is the point that makes the organ transplant team face many major challenges.
However, a miracle has happened: the father and son have good immune connectivity, helping to reduce the risk of placental decomposition - an important factor determining the success of the surgery.
After surgery, K experienced impaired kidney transplant function and had to have a blood filtration for nearly two weeks. By the 14th day after the transplant, the kidneys began to function again, urine levels improved significantly and K's health improved day by day.
After more than two weeks of intensive treatment, K was discharged from the hospital in a stable state of health. For him, this revival is not only an achievement of modern medicine but also an invaluable gift - a continuation of life from the deceased father himself.
This special case not only marks the first time in Vietnam that a brain-dead father has donated a kidney to save his biological child, but also spreads a strong message about the spirit of humanity, compassion and the sacred value of family love.
