Causes of headaches during pregnancy
Below are the causes of headaches during each stage of pregnancy.
1. During the first trimester (weeks 1 to 12)
Hormonal changes: Rapid increases in hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, can cause headaches in early pregnancy. Hormonal changes affect blood circulation and can lead to headaches.
Increased blood volume: During the first few weeks of pregnancy, blood volume increases significantly, which can lead to changes in blood pressure and cause headaches.
Dehydration: Nausea and vomiting (common in early pregnancy) can lead to dehydration, a headache trigger.
Stress: During early pregnancy, many women experience excessive stress and anxiety. Emotional stress can trigger headaches.
Changes in sleep habits: During pregnancy, many women often experience sleep disturbances, fatigue, and can lead to tension headaches.
2. During the second trimester (weeks 13 to 26)
Hormonal changes: After the first trimester, hormonal changes continue and this can cause headaches.
Physical changes: As the uterus grows, changes in posture and body weight distribution can lead to tension headaches, especially in the neck and shoulder area.
Increased stress: Psychological stress during pregnancy can be prolonged, leading to headaches.
Dietary changes: Changing your diet, skipping meals, or quitting caffeine can trigger headaches.
3. Third trimester (weeks 27 to 40)
Preeclampsia: According to the UK National Health Service, headaches can be a symptom of preeclampsia. This is a serious condition characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems. If your headaches are severe or accompanied by symptoms such as vision changes, swelling or abdominal pain, seek medical attention immediately.
Stress, discomfort: As pregnancy progresses, physical discomforts such as back pain, neck and shoulder discomfort, can lead to headaches.
Sleep disturbances: Feeling uncomfortable and anxious about labor can lead to sleep disturbances, causing fatigue headaches.
How to treat headaches during pregnancy
Drink enough water: Drinking enough water is essential for the body, especially during pregnancy and morning sickness. This also helps reduce headaches.
Rest: Rest and adequate sleep help combat fatigue that causes headaches.
Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the forehead or neck has a numbing effect, reducing the feeling of a headache.
Massage: Gently massaging around the temples and neck area can help relieve tension and reduce the feeling of a headache.
