Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which can spread quickly through the respiratory tract and direct contact. People with the disease often have symptoms of fever, fatigue, rash accompanied by itching and blisters on the skin.
According to Ms. Edwina Raj, Head of Clinical Nutrition & Diet at Aster CMI Hospital (Bangalore, India), no vegetable or food can completely prevent chickenpox. However, a nutrient-rich diet can help boost the immune system, thereby supporting the body to fight viruses and recover faster if sick.
Below are 5 types of vegetables recommended by experts to supplement during the chickenpox season:
Rich in vitamin A, which helps maintain skin health and strengthens the body's natural protective barrier against infectious agents.
Spinach: Provides vitamin A, vitamin C and iron, which help support the immune system and improve physical condition when the body is weak.
Broccoli: Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which help protect cells and increase resistance.
Bell peppers: A rich source of vitamin C, contributing to strengthening the ability to fight viral diseases.
Sweet potatoes: Rich in vitamin A and fiber, support skin recovery and improve overall health.
In addition to green vegetables, some other foods also help boost immunity such as fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, guavas, papayas), yogurt that supports the gut microbiome, nuts that provide zinc and healthy fats, whole grains and beans rich in protein. A balanced diet helps the body have enough energy and nutrients to fight infections.
For people with chickenpox, choosing the right food is even more important. Soft, easy-to-digest dishes such as vegetable soup, porridge, boiled vegetables, coconut water or herbal water help the body retain water and reduce fatigue. Homemade food should be prioritized, and strong spices should be limited.
Conversely, patients should avoid fried foods, spicy and hot foods, sugary foods, foods that are too salty or processed foods because they can make the body more uncomfortable and affect the recovery process.
Reasonable nutrition does not replace vaccination or medical treatment, but plays an important role in supporting the immune system. When the body is provided with enough vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the ability to fight viruses will be better, thereby reducing the risk of complications and shortening recovery time.
