On August 26, news from Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that the Center for Traumatology, Orthopedics and Burns had just successfully performed a microsurgery to reconnect a patient with a near severed right ankle due to a lawnmower accident.
The patient in Bac Ninh Hoa commune was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment on the morning of August 21st in a state where his right ankle was almost completely severed. The wound was caused by a sharp object, leaving only a small skin strip of about 4cm on the back of his ankle.
Faced with serious injury, the patient is at risk of necrosis and loss of motor function in the ankle area if not intervened in time.
Immediately after receiving the patient, doctors from the Center for Trauma, Orthopedics and Burns quickly consulted and performed emergency surgery.
The surgical team cleaned the wound, removed the foreign object, and combined the ankle bone with Kirschner nails. Doctors simultaneously performed microsurgery techniques, stitching 2 arteries, 4 veins and the tibia nerve.
The tendon system in the injured area is also stitched up, including the anterior tibia tendon, the general extensor tendon of the fingers, the extensor tendon of the thumb, the long thumb flexor tendon, the flexor tendon of the fingers and the heel tendon.
After completing the stitching, doctors check the irrigation condition. The toes are pink, warm, and tense, and the feet are fixed with a calf flour splint.
By the 5th postoperative day, the patient's health was stable, and vital signs were stable.
The tips of the toes must be pink and tense; the surgical wound is dry and the toes have moved well. The patient continued to be instructed on functional rehabilitation, ensuring nutrition and preventing infection.
According to the Center for Trauma and Orthopedics and Burns, on average, each year the unit receives about 10 cases of severed, near- severed limb or partial limb severance due to accidents.
