According to information from Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital, the Otolaryngology Department recently received a case of a 56-year-old patient, residing in Phu Ninh commune, hugging his ear and running into the hospital in a state of pain, panic, suspecting that insects were flying into his ear.
According to the patient's account, on the way home from work, he suddenly felt a strange object flying straight into his right ear. After that, a buzzing sound appeared accompanied by severe ear pain, causing him to be dizzy, lightheaded, and lose his composure.
I just felt something flying into my ear, then a sharp pain in the ear area spreading to the top of my head accompanied by tinnitus, dizziness and hearing continuous sounds in my ears. The more I tried to shake my head, the more painful it became" - the patient shared.
Immediately after receiving the patient, doctors at the Otolaryngology Department quickly proceeded to examine the patient.
Through endoscopy, doctors discovered a living insect deep in the patient's right ear canal.
After a few minutes of treatment, the doctor successfully removed the foreign object, a robin bee nearly 2cm in size, helping the patient escape pain and stabilize his psychology.
According to MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Luan, Department of Otolaryngology, insects crawling into the ear is a common situation, especially in the summer or when moving outdoors. When entering the ear canal, insects can move, scratch, causing injury to the ear canal or eardrum wall, leading to ear pain, tinnitus, bleeding, and even affecting hearing if handled incorrectly.
Therefore, Dr. Luan recommends that when suspecting foreign objects or insects entering the ear, people should absolutely not use cotton swabs, tweezers or hard objects to remove them themselves because it can cause foreign objects to go deeper, causing damage to the ear canal and eardrum. Patients should remain calm, limit picking their ears and go to a medical facility for safe and timely treatment.
