On July 9, the Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri) said that doctors had just successfully operated on a rare case of a 2-day-old baby brain-mingling herniation.
The patient is the child of Ms. N.T.D, residing in Nam Gianh commune, Quang Tri province. As soon as he was born, his family discovered an unusual tumor in his spine and he was quickly transferred to the hospital on June 28.
Through examination and diagnosis, doctors determined that children with meningococcal herniation and congenital deformities in the spinal cord can cause neurological dysfunction, seriously affecting their appearance and daily activities.
Information from the hospital, this is a serious case, the surgery is very complicated, requiring high techniques and coordination with many specialties. In particular, premature babies are prone to complications of anesthesia and resuscitation and post-operative infections.
After an interdisciplinary consultation, the surgical team including the Department of Neurosurgery, the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, the Department of Pediatrics and functional departments decided to perform the surgery early. Children are carefully prepared before surgery, fully assessing the level of nerve damage to minimize the risk.
The surgery lasted for many hours and was successful. Currently, the patient's health is stable, and complications are being closely monitored, especially the risk of surgical site infection and meningitis.
According to Master, Doctor CKII Nguyen Van Man, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, if not detected and treated promptly, the herniated mass can rupture, leading to serious infections, leaving permanent or life-threatening neurological sequelae.
Master, Doctor CKII Nguyen Van Man recommends that pregnant women should have regular check-ups and ultrasounds to screen for neural tube defects from an early stage. After giving birth, if a child is found to have obvious birth defects in the spine, they should immediately be taken to a neurological surgeonical hospital for proper treatment.
