Broccoli can help reduce the risk of diabetes thanks to its sulforaphane compound.

Diabetes and broccoli sprouts

According to a study by the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts can help improve blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes - the early stage of type 2 diabetes.

In a new study published in the journal Nature Microbiology, Professor Anders Rosengren (Lund University, Sweden) and colleagues conducted an experiment on 89 people aged 35 to 75 with high fasting blood sugar, an index of prediabetes. Other criteria include being overweight or obese - factors that increase the risk of developing into type 2 diabetes.

The participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group used sulforaphane and the other group used giametics for 12 weeks.

The results showed that the group using sulforaphane significantly reduced blood sugar compared to the group using pharmaceuticals.

In particular, the effectiveness is more obvious in people with mild signs of diabetes in old age, low BMI, low insulin resistance, low fatty liver and good insulin secretion.

Benefits of broccoli and diabetes treatment

Professor Anders Rosengren said that the current treatment of prediabetes still has many limitations. However, adding these sulforaphane-rich foods such as broccoli to your diet can have health benefits.

He emphasized that to prevent and control diabetes, it is necessary to combine healthy eating, regular exercise and maintaining weight.
