Laptops are familiar devices in modern life. Many people use laptops to work, study, watch movies or keep in touch with friends. Placing laptops directly on their thighs when sitting on a sofa or bed is also quite common. However, for pregnant women, this habit may make many people wonder about the safety of the fetus.
According to experts, the use of a laptop on the thigh during pregnancy has not been proven to be directly harmful, but caution should still be exercised to limit potential risks.
Why can placing a laptop on your lap cause concern?
Laptops when operating often radiate heat and emit a low electromagnetic field. When placed on the thigh, this heat source is near the abdomen, where the fetus is developing.
Dr. Rajsri J Shankar, an obstetrician at Apollo Cradle & Children's Hospital (Chennai, India) said that although there is no clear evidence that laptops are harmful to the fetus, pregnant women should still limit prolonged heat exposure, especially in the first three months.
A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility also shows that placing a laptop on your thigh can increase the temperature in the exposed area. Therefore, experts recommend avoid placing the laptop near the abdomen during pregnancy.
How to use a laptop safer for pregnant mothers
Doctors believe that pregnant women can still use laptops, but should change some habits to reduce risks.
First of all, you should place the laptop on a table or hard surface instead of placing it directly on your thigh. This helps limit heat transfer directly to the body.
In addition, using a cooling pad or laptop support also helps the device dissipate heat better. If you need to work for a long time, pregnant mothers can use a separate keyboard and mouse to place the laptop further away from their body.
Some experts also recommend reducing exposure to the electromagnetic field by using a wired internet connection or switching the device to airplane mode when no connection is needed.
In addition, pregnant mothers should not sit for too long when using a computer. Standing up to exercise, stretching shoulders or walking gently after each working period will help improve blood circulation and reduce feelings of fatigue.
You should listen to your body
If you feel hot, uncomfortable, or notice a laptop emitting strong heat when placed close to your body, pregnant mothers should stop using it and adjust the device's position.
Experts emphasize that small changes in the habit of using electronic devices can help pregnant women feel more secure and comfortable in daily life.
In case of any health concerns during pregnancy, consulting a doctor is still the best option to get appropriate advice.
